What better way to enjoy the great outdoors than by throwing a rucksack on your back and getting out there? But, as the old saying goes “leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories”. Though that should probably be updated to read “take nothing but hundreds and hundreds of selfies”. With that in mind, here are some top tips to help you enjoy camping the eco-friendly way.

Get a greener pitch

It all starts with the campsite. Organisations such asEco-Friendly Tourist,The Greener Camping Club,Green Traveller and others provide a list of eco-friendly campsites around the UK. These campsites try and make sure that they’re not having a negative impact on the environment and often use green initiatives such as solar heated showers.

Stick to the path

Unless you’re lucky enough to be walking over common ground, such as parts of Dartmoor and Exmoor in the UK, then stick to the path! Your heavy walking boots can damage local fauna and flora.

Go reusable

Go plastic free

Make your camping experience as plastic free as possible. Not only does this mean ditching the plastic plates and cups, it also means cutting down on plastic bags. Especially when they are prone to blowing away and into the wild.

Go for minimal packing

When it comes to foodstuffs it is important that they have as little packaging as possible. After all, if you’re having a snack halfway through your walk or cooking up a breakfast in the morning you still need to dispose of the packaging and if your campsite doesn’t have a recycling bin that means carrying it all back home with you.

Get greenwashing (of the good kind)

The idea of bathing in a lake or a stream might sound idyllic, and it is - until your soap kills the surrounding wildlife. Be sure to use eco-friendly, chemical free soaps when out and about in the wild (and at home!).
