June 19th is National Refill Day. What is National Refill Day you ask? Itâs a national campaign, organised byRefill.org
to raise public awareness about plastic pollution and help to prevent millions of single-use plastic bottles from polluting our streets and oceans. Â The campaign, now in its second year, made a big splash in 2018 when it attracted the attention of DEFRA, the Environment Agency, MPs, various campaigners and celebrities such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Â
âApproximately 13 billion plastic bottles
are used each year in the UK.
Only 7.5 billion are recycled.âÂÂ
As well as raising awareness about the millions of single-use plastic bottles that pollute our environment the campaign wants to make carrying a reusable water bottle a social norm. It also wants to make sure that everyone knows how easy it is to find free drinking water by using the Refill app or looking out for the Refill symbol.Â
 Â
As well as carrying your reusable water bottle with pride, you can join the campaign on social media with the #GotTheBottle. You can also check out the National Refill Schemes taking place near you, or find out information on how to start your own. SeeRefill.org here for more info.
Â
Itâs easy to feel powerless when faced with the scale of single-use plastic bottle pollution. All movements start with individuals though. Carrying your reusable water bottle with pride, refilling it rather than buying single-use plastic bottles and spreading the word does make a difference. If just one in ten Brits refilled bottles just once a week, we would reduce the number of plastic bottles being used by 340 million every year.
Â
âGlobally, we buy one million plastic bottles every minute.
Think about that.â
Big companies are cashing in on the backlash against single-use plastic bottles by offering reusable bottles made of...plastic! Thatâs right, replacing single-use plastic bottles with more plastic bottles. Â While it does reduce the amount of plastic in the oceans, it is still plastic.Â
Â
Stainless steel beats plastic or aluminum hands down for your water bottle. Always free fromharmful  BPA chemicals stainless steel water bottles are the most durable, safest and are 100% recyclable at the end of their long life.
Â
