The Spark Behind World Refill Day

Picture a mountain of plastic bottles clogging your favourite park or beach. That’s the mess that inspired World Refill Day.  Born from the vision of City to Sea, a UK-based nonprofit founded in 2015, this global campaign took flight to tackle the plastic pollution crisis head-on. Refill, their flagship initiative, launched World Refill Day on June 16th  2019, as a worldwide wake-up call dedicated to rallying people, businesses, and communities to ditch single-use plastics and embrace refilling with reusables. From a grassroots idea to a global movement, it’s about rewriting our throwaway habits and protecting our planet. At Elephant Box, we’re all in!

It's Easy To Be Pessimistic

The stakes are high: millions of tons of plastic flood landfills and oceans annually—300 million tons, to be exact.  Single-use culprits like bottles, straws, and bags pile up fast, with many lingering for centuries. But World Refill Day focuses us all on concrete actions to reverse the trend of disposables, showing how a simple shift to reusables cuts waste, saves you money, and gives us a chance to break from the norm. It’s our moment to reset and encourage friends colleagues and communities to build a cleaner future.

Our Role in the Refill Fight

We started Elephant Box back in 2015 precisely because we wanted to be part of the solution to the problem of plastic and disposables, crafting sturdy, practical reusables to fit your life. Here’s some products to power your refill mission:

Here’s how you can dive into World Refill Day and make a real impact:

1. Pledge to Refill: Commit to skipping single-use plastics—carry a reusable bottle and container and watch your waste shrink.

2. Gear Up: You don't need to buy anything new to join in. Jam jars are good for refill shops, everyone has a store of old plastic tubs in their cupboards and a water bottle! Plastic containers for food and drink isnt the best choice however so when you finances allow, its good to start replacing old plastic with steel or glass containers, just so you're not ingesting harmful toxins or micro-plastics. 3. Host a Refill Station: Got a café or shop? Put a sign up to offer free water refills or promote reusable swaps—be a local hero! 

4. Spread the Buzz: Snap a photo of your reusable in action, post it with #WorldRefillDay, and nudge friends or family to join the fun.

5. Learn & Share: Join a local World Refill Day event—cleanups, workshops, or talks—or host one to spark change in your community.

6. Go Beyond the Day: Make refilling a habit—bring your bottle to the gym, your cup to the café, and say no to plastic for good.
